Canada's first community-led

Trans Housing Initiative

A home for our community

Two-Spirit, trans, and gender diverse people in Alberta are some of the most resilient, beautiful, and community-minded people we know. They're also far too likely to be housing insecure, economically stretched by systems that were never built with them in mind, and carrying the weight of ongoing stigma and discrimination.

This fall, we're opening Canada's first community-led Trans Housing Initiative: 21 permanent, affordable homes in Northwest Calgary for Two-Spirit, trans, and gender diverse people navigating economic barriers. Each suite is fully furnished with its own washroom, with all utilities, Wi-Fi, and laundry included, alongside shared kitchen and common spaces and programming residents can opt into when they're ready.

This is housing. Stable, dignified, and theirs.

How we're building it

The Trans Housing initiative is grounded in the Housing First model: Stable housing is a human right, and it comes first, with no preconditions.

Layered over this is an Asset-Based Community Development approach, trusting that the people closest to the ground, residents themselves, are best positioned to build a community that looks after itself.

A Community Coordinator works on-site five days a week. Residents will have on-site access to all of Skipping Stone’s individual services & supports, as well as plenty of programming that might include: shared meals, community events, capacity-building workshops, or wellness activities. All theirs to access or not, as they see fit.

Why we're building it

Among the 1,000+ community members Skipping Stone walked alongside in 2025:
• 15% were homeless or precariously housed.
• One in three were living in poverty.
• Over 60% named housing as one of their most profound sources of stress.

Most traditional housing options are either inaccessible or unsafe for our community.
The result is people trading safety or dignity for shelter, or staying in dangerous situations for lack of anywhere else to go.

Stable housing is the foundation that makes everything else possible.
