Peer Mentor
Program

Skipping Stone’s Peer Mentor Program matches individuals with volunteer mentors as a way of building connect and community.

Peer mentorships are a way for people to share lived experiences, provide space to process thoughts and emotions and increase visibility of trans individuals and families thriving. Mentors and mentees are supported by Skipping Stone with monthly check-ins, invites and free tickets to Calgary-based events as well as comprehensive support and resources from our team for navigating any challenging needs.

Peer mentoring is available to two-spirit, trans and gender diverse individuals under 30 as well as parents and caregivers of trans and gender diverse youth. Each cycle of matching runs for a 6 month period.

If you’re interested in being a mentee, you can either schedule an intake here or email our Peer Mentoring Coordinator here.

  • We’re thrilled you’re interested in being a Peer Mentor with us, so let’s meet!

To begin, either complete an Adult Intake appointment here and let the intake worker know you’re interested, or sign up to be a mentor volunteer on our website.

The process for becoming a mentor will look something like this:

    • After expressing your interest, you will receive a peer mentor application form. This allows us to create your profile and allows us to find matches that best share interests, skills and lived experience.

    • Once your profile is created, our Peer Mentoring Coordinator will meet with you one on one to explore your goals and needs in becoming a mentor and share more in depth information about the program.

    • Mentors will then go through training to equip them with the skills and info they need to effectively support their mentee.

    • Finally, a program and policy agreement will be signed, and because of the nature of one-on-one mentorship, we require mentors to complete a vulnerable sector check.

Once onboarded, you’ll be matched with a mentee. Your first connection will be to explore their goals and what shape is best for the relationship. Each pairing is unique - some are completely virtual, some are always in person, some meet weekly, others meet monthly - whatever best supports the match is perfect.

Each month you will also be asked to attend a 1/2hr virtual check in with the Peer Mentoring Coordinator to share about how the match is going and identify any support you or your mentee might need.

At the end of your 6 month relationship, we throw a wrap-up event to celebrate the connections you have made. At this time you can decide to end your commitment or continue with us as a mentor either with your current mentee or a new one.
